How should I prepare for a move to Alaska? -

My boyfriend is going to be stationed at Ft. Richardson and we are moving there in a few months. I have lived in Missouri my whole life so I am a bit nervous but I would like to prepare the best I can. Should I stock up on any pricey items? What kind of winter gear should I get?

Anchorage gets cold and dark in the winter. That will be the biggest adjustment. Goods at the PX are a lot cheaper than what everyone off post pays, so the cost of living won t be too much higher than in Missouri. Layers are essential here, wool is the best. I like a good down jacket to keep me warm. A lot of people who move up here have the most trouble with the darkness. Buying a SAD light is a good way to maintain sanity.

some things are a little more expensive in AK. but it wont break the bank. Anchorage gets pretty cold and can get a lot of snow. better buy some long johns! oh, and this summer take the 5 hour drive south to the town of Homer, you ll love it!!!! its easy to find, just get on HWY 1 south, thats the only road in =)

get stuff for cold weather jackets, wood for fireplace
